Frequently asked questions
How does song key detection work?
The tool extracts every chord in your paste and scores every possible major and minor key by how many of the chords belong to that key's diatonic set. The highest-scoring key wins, with small bonuses for keys whose tonic appears as the first or last chord.
Will it work if my song changes key?
Partially. The detector assumes a single key across the whole input. If your song modulates, paste one section at a time for best results.
Can it tell major from minor?
Yes. Because a major key and its relative minor share the same notes, the detector uses the first and last chord as a tiebreaker — a song that ends on Am is treated as A minor, not C major.
Is this the same as identifying the key signature?
Close, but not quite. Key signature is a notation concept. Key detection looks at which chords are actually used. Songs in a particular key signature usually match the detector result, but not always.
